李铁夫晚清时期赴北美洲谋生与学艺，在海外生活长达四十余年。 他曾追随美国艺术大师萨金特、威廉·切斯等人学习，对油画写实造型和表现有深入研究，同时又拥有良好的传统文化底蕴，在西画人物、静物、风景以及中国书画方面都有突出造诣。他的艺术业绩为我们研究19世纪末至20世纪上半叶的中国西画提供了一份独特而深具价值的样本。
